Rep. Clyburn Visits McNair Students

U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn and Lake City Mayor Yamekia Robinson visited Dr. Ronald E. McNair School of Digital Communication and Leadership on Wednesday, April 1, to participate in a student-led Civic Engagement Program designed to bring classroom learning to life.
Held in the school gymnasium, the event provided approximately 30 eighth-grade students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with both a national and local leader as part of their South Carolina Social Studies coursework.
The program began with a student-led welcome, followed by opening remarks from school staff outlining the purpose of the event. Student representatives from STARS and the Gentlemen’s Leadership Club introduced Mayor Robinson and Congressman Clyburn, respectively.
A highlight of the event was the student issue presentations, where a select group of students read prepared letters addressing topics impacting their community, including education, public safety, the environment and economic opportunity. Congressman Clyburn and Mayor Robinson responded to each presentation, offering perspectives on how these issues can be addressed through local leadership, community initiatives and federal policy.
The program also included a student-led question-and-answer session featuring participation from Amanda Cullars-White’s Gifted and Talented students. This segment allowed additional students to engage in meaningful dialogue and gain insight into civic responsibility and public service.
The event concluded with closing remarks and expressions of appreciation for the guests’ time and commitment to student engagement.
“We appreciate Congressman Clyburn and Mayor Robinson providing this opportunity for our students to see the real-world impact of civic involvement and understand how their voices can contribute to meaningful change,” said Principal Charm Eaddy. “We are proud to provide experiences that connect academic learning with active citizenship.”
