Florence County School District Three’s two new magnet schools are now accepting student applications for the 2018-2019 school year.

The application window opened Thursday, February 15, and will remain open through Thursday, March 15. The online application is available at https://florence3.novuschoice.com/.

Olanta Creative Arts and Science Magnet School is open to students in grades 4K-5. J. Paul Truluck Creative Arts and Science Magnet School is open to students in grades 6-9 with plans to phase in grades 10-12.

The magnet schools were created as part of a five-year, $9.1 million Magnet Schools Assistance Programs grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement for its Project C3 Explores: Colleges, Cultures, & Careers initiative.

The goal of Project C3 is to expand student and parental choice and reduce the isolation of African-American students while enabling all students to pursue rigorous, engaging programs of study that meet challenging academic standards and provide preparation for college and careers.

In order to ensure racial integration and socioeconomic diversity, both magnet schools have open enrollment. Additionally, both magnet schools will be a choice option for students in neighboring counties.

Olanta Elementary Creative Arts and Science will serve 352 students (116 additional seats) through creative arts and science themed project based hands-on learning environments designed to foster a range of critical thinking and problem-solving skills through art and science infused learning while exposing students to a wide array of college and career choices.

J. Paul Truluck Intermediate Creative Arts and Science will serve 396 students (132 additional seats) through creative arts and science themed project based hands-on learning environments to develop competencies in both the arts and science while challenging students both intellectually and creatively in efforts to expose students to the wide array of career choices in the arts and science.
