Lake City Early College High School held its inaugural Certified Nursing Assistant Pinning Ceremony on Friday, February 7.

MaKailyn Bowers, Abigail Toledo, McKenzi Jenkins, Sania’ Manigault and Bre’Asia Witherspoon on earned CNA certification. Students had their pins placed on their scrubs by loved ones in attendance. The newly pinned CNAs then took their oaths and marched out.

Led by Dr. Alicia Thomas and Brooke Shirlaw, five students from LCECHS completed the coursework and clinical hours to become certified nursing assistants before graduating from high school. This is the first cohort of students to earn this certification directly through LCEHS’s Health Science CTE Program.

The ceremony began with a poem from Dr. Thomas focusing on the different aspects of being a nurse, followed by the guest speaker Josie Serrano (CNA) who detailed her career as a traveling CNA. Ms. Serrano explained how her career has allowed her to visit and work in places all around the country and highlighted the value of diversifying their certifications, which allows more opportunities to work.

Awards also were the presented to students for their academic and clinical achievements.

Because of this expansion to the health science program, LCECHS is now an accredited CNA Certification Site. This tremendous accomplishment will blaze a bright future for students to come.
