
Five former athletes were inducted in the 11th class of Florence School District 3's Athletic Hall of Fame Friday, September 19.
Dashawn Butler, Vence “Bill” Hanna, John Kirby, Charles “Bootney” McFadden and Shay Rollins were inducted during a halftime ceremony of Lake City High School's football game against East Clarendon at Ward Memorial Stadium.
The Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding athletes, coaches and others who contribute to athletics from current and past high schools in the district.
"We are extremely proud to honor these amazing athletes from Florence County School District Three,” said Lake City High School Athletic Director Matt Apicella. “These five inductees represent multiple generations and have gone on to successful lives representing the product we strive to produce.”
Any athletic alumnus, coach, or significant department advocate is eligible for nomination by an alumnus of a current or former high school in Florence County School District Three. A nominee must be at least five years removed from graduation or employment with the district. The selection committee is comprised of the FCSD3 Superintendent, Lake City High principal, athletic director, assistant athletic director and district communications director. Nominations must be submitted to the athletic director. The next deadline for nominations is April 17, 2026.
Dashawn Butler

Dashawn Butler is a 2011 graduate of Lake City High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track.
Butler was first recognized as a special athlete while still in middle school as he became a varsity basketball starter in the eighth grade. He was also a four-year starter at quarterback for the varsity football team.
As the quarterback of the Panthers, Butler helped Lake City to a 34-13 overall career record with six of those losses coming during his freshman season. He was named All-Region three times, All-Zone, All-State and played in the prestigious North-South All-Star Game.
As a five-year starter for basketball Coach Willie Thomas, Butler scored over 1,200 career points and was a four-time All-Region selection, a two-time All-Zone honoree, and helped guide the team to a Lowerstate Championship in 2010. The Panthers fell to Daniel in the State Championship game.
Additionally, Dashawn qualified for the state track meet twice, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.
Following graduation, Butler was awarded a football scholarship to South Carolina State University where he continued his athletic career at the collegiate level.
Dashawn Butler currently resides in Columbia with his wife, Patrice, and son, Mason.
Vence “Bill” Hanna

Vence “Bill” Hanna is a 2017 graduate of Lake City High School. Hanna was an exceptional three-sport athlete, but he truly left his mark on the baseball diamond.
A five-year starter for the varsity baseball team, Hanna was named All-Region four times and All-State three times. During his senior season, Hanna helped lead the Panthers to the Region and District Championship titles. He finished with over 100 career hits and 90 stolen bases. Hanna was selected for the 2017 North-South Baseball All-Star game.
Following graduation, Hanna accepted a baseball scholarship to USC-Sumter where he received the Golden Glove award for his defensive prowess and was named First Team Region X. He played a significant role in helping USC-Sumter claim the Region X Championship and his exceptional performance led him to be named Player of the Year at the school. Following the pandemic, Hanna continued his career at Francis Marion University where he was a three-year starter in centerfield for the Patriots and led the team in steals during that span.
His impressive career continued in the Coastal Plains League with the Gastonia Grizzlies where he led the league in stolen bases and helped the team win both the First and Second Half Championships. Hanna also was named to the 2nd Team Coastal Plains League.
Hanna graduated from USC-Sumter with an Associate’s degree in Arts and from Francis Marion University with Bachelor of Science in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice.
Hanna currently resides in Lake City.
John Kirby
A 2000 graduate of Lake City High School, John Kirby is remembered as one of the best offensive lineman to ever wear a Panthers uniform.
A three-year starter for Coach Mickey Moss, Kirby’s versatility and leadership were apparent from the very beginning as he played tackle, guard and center. Kirby was known as a tenacious blocker who routinely finished his opponents on their backs.
Throughout his career, Kirby was named to the High School Sports Report All-State team, the WBTW-TV 13 All-Area Team, and earned All-Region V-AAA honors in both 1998 and 1999. In addition, John was recognized as the Lake City O-Lineman of the Year in both 1998 and 1999. Kirby was selected to play in the prestigious 63rd Annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, where he played all offensive snaps as an alternating pulling guard in a 24-3 victory.
After graduating from Lake City High School, John accepted a football scholarship to Georgia Military Junior College where he continued to excel at both guard and center. Kirby was a key member of the 2001 NJCAA National Championship team and earned All-Southeastern Region honors as a sophomore.
Currently, John Kirby resides in Lake City.
Charles “Bootney” McFadden

Charles “Bootney” McFadden is recognized as one of Lake City High School’s best all-around athletes as he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. The 1986 alumnus was a force in every season.
McFadden was a four-year varsity starter at quarterback, point guard and catcher for the Panthers. He accumulated numerous All-Region and All-Area honors. In 1986, He was received the Herb Rollins Award which recognizes the top overall athlete at Lake City High School.
Following graduation, McFadden was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 28th round of the 1986 Major League Baseball draft and played for the Gulf Coast Reds’ minor league team.
After his stint in the minors, McFadden turned to a life as a civil servant as a member of the United States Army, US Postal service and law enforcement officer, eventually serving as Police Chief in Lane, SC. For the last 29 years, McFadden has worked as the CEO/Founder of CDM Pro Audio/DJ Services.
McFadden currently lives in Kingstree and has one son, Cayden, who is attending Lander University and majoring in Digital Media and Audio.
Shay Rollins

A 1971 graduate of Lake City High School, Shay Rollins lettered 12 times in five varsity sports including football, basketball, baseball, track and golf.
A three-year letterman in football, Rollins played quarterback and cornerback while also returning punts. As a senior, he led the squad to a 9-1 record and was named to the Coastal Plains All-Star team.
Rollins lettered two years in basketball and led the team in scoring his junior and senior seasons. He scored over 30 points three times with a career-high of 35. Rollins was named to the North-South All-Star team.
Following graduation, Rollins was a scholarship athlete at Francis Marion University where he played basketball and tennis. He was named MVP of the tennis program after his junior season.
After finishing at Francis Marion, Rollins entered the education and coaching world. His education career spanned 40 years. He spent five years at Johnsonville High School as the varsity baseball coach where he was named conference coach of the year twice, state coach of the year, and led the Flashes to the 1980 state championship.
As an amateur golfer and tennis player, Rollins won the club championship in both sports at Wellman Country Club and the Darlington Country Club. He finished runner-up in golf at the Southern 500 Tournament and the Lake City Invitational.
Rollins currently resides in Lexington, SC with his wife, Pat. He has two sons, Bert and Heath, and two grandchildren, Charlotte and Maddox.
