The Lake City High School Class of 1982 has been selected as a recipient of the Champions of Public Education award from the South Carolina School Boards Association.
The award was presented to members of the Class of 1982 by SCSBA President Michele Branning and Region 5 Director Ervin Richardson during FSD3’s Board of Trustees meeting Thursday, September 19.
The Champions for Public Education award recognizes community residents, organizations or local businesses/industries whose support of and contributions to public education have significantly benefited the entire school district or public schools statewide.
The Class of 1982 was nominated for the award by FSD3 Superintendent Dr. Laura Hickson based on their support of FSD3 through annual donations to promote STEM opportunities and camps for students.
“Their contributions extend beyond financial support; they have actively inspired their families and friends to donate, amplifying their impact on our students' education,” Dr. Hickson stated in her nomination.
The Class of 1982’s contributions and other funding have provided hands-on learning opportunities for FSD3 students. Some of the learning experiences included attending Space Camp in Houston, Texas, which allowed students to visit the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Center and gain valuable insights into the field of aeronautics. The group was also instrumental in students attending week-long STEM Camps at Allen University to provide immersive experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which foster a deep interest in these fields among our students. In addition, the Class of 1982 supported the district’s efforts to host Camp Propel. This district-level aeronautics camp offered hands-on learning experiences that encouraged students to explore STEM careers.
