Florence School District 3’s Board of Trustees approved a modified calendar for the 2022-2023 school year during the board’s regular monthly meeting Thursday.

FSD3 now must apply to the State Department of Education for a waiver to begin the school year before the third Monday of August.

FSD3's calendar committee hosted several virtual meetings with parents, students, employees, and community members to share the modified and traditional calendars and request feedback. Stakeholders also had the opportunity to complete a survey to share their calendar preferences.

Of the responses to the survey, 52 percent of staff and 51 percent of parents preferred the modified calendar. Another 10 percent of parents said they support a modified calendar but preferred that it be implemented in 2023-2024 rather than next year.

Under the modified calendar, teachers return July 25 for a week of professional development and workdays. Students return on August 1. The last day of school for students is May 26.

The calendar includes the Thanksgiving break November 21-25, winter break December 19-January 2 and spring break April 10-14. Three eLearning Days are scheduled for October 5 and February 20-21 if needed to make up instructional days lost due to inclement weather.

It also includes two short breaks, called intercession, October 5-7 and February 22-24. During intercession, students can choose to participate in enrichment opportunities such as performance camps, interest camps, showcases and performances, in addition to opportunities currently offered by the district.
