Teams Bring Ideas to Improve School SafetyStaff members from throughout Florence County School District Three gathered Thursday night at the Lake City High School gym to discuss school safety and to discuss suggested changes to school safety plans.

Teams from each school and the district office brainstormed ways to make schools and offices more secure and safe for students and staff. After discussing ideas among themselves, teams presented their suggestions to the entire group.

Ideas ranged from simple procedural changes for bus riders to ensuring classroom doors remain locked throughout the school day to additional security cameras and adding electric strikes to entrance doors that would require someone inside the building to remotely unlock a door to allow a visitor to enter.

The discussion included input from representatives of both the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the Lake City Police Department.

School safety also will be the focus at the district’s annual strategic planning meeting March 29 with parents, business leaders and other community leaders. Participants will be asked to provide ideas and suggestions for improving school safety throughout the district.
