Members of the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Committee awarded scholarships Tuesday, March 24, to students and staff at two FSD3 schools along with presenting a special gift.
As a product of FSD3, Dr. Ronald E. McNair consistently emphasized the importance of education. In his honor, the committee challenged students to visit the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Life History Center to learn more about his life and legacy. Students were then asked to write essays reflecting on their experience, as well as how Dr. McNair’s achievements have impacted, and will continue to influence their own aspirations.
Before his passing, Dr. McNair’s mother asked whether he would return to South Carolina to inspire local youth. Today, the Ronald McNair Committee, along with pilot Cedric Davis, is fulfilling that wish by bringing Dr. McNair’s story full circle. A native of Lake City and an FSD3 graduate, Mr. Davis was directly inspired by Dr. McNair’s legacy. His journey into aviation reflects the very determination, curiosity, and pursuit of excellence that Dr. McNair championed. By sharing his own experiences with students, Mr. Davis serves as a living example of what is possible when inspiration meets opportunity, helping students see that they too can achieve greatness.
The committee visited several classrooms at DREM, including those of Ms. Kimberly Cooper, Mr. Dorrell Benjamin, and Ms. Nneka Edwards. In each class, selected students shared essays about their visits to the Life History Center and the lessons they learned. Each class received a $250 scholarship awarded to the teacher to support ongoing student learning and enrichment.
At Lake City Early College High School two students, Samir Wahab and Kaitlyn Turner, were recognized with individual scholarships for their outstanding essays. Turner also participated in the STEM Inc. program, where 10 young women from FSD3 schools traveled to Houston, Texas. During the trip, they explored NASA facilities and connected with professionals who encouraged them to pursue careers in STEM fields.
In addition, students from Main Street Elementary School’s Gifted and Talented Program received a set of drones to enhance their STEM learning experiences.
Through these efforts, the committee continues to inspire students to remain curious, work hard, and pursue their dreams just as Dr. McNair did.
