Seniors Graduate in Modified Ceremony

Seniors Graduate in Modified Ceremony

It wasn’t the traditional graduation ceremony, but 165 graduates at Lake City High School walked across the stage in the gym to receive their high school diplomas in a modified, in-person ceremony Friday, June 5.

The seniors participated in a parade that started at the Lifelong Learning Center on Graham Road and traveled along South Blanding before turning on East Main Street. The parade followed Main Street and turned on Matthews Road before ending at the high school campus.

Students and up to seven family members and friends filed into the gym while maintaining social distancing guidelines to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas and congratulations from school and district administrators.

Valedictorian Kimani Ross and Salutatorian Savannah Patrick both addressed their fellow graduates with recorded speeches shared on the school’s social media accounts.

“To my teachers, coaches, principals, and other staff members at LCHS, thank you so much for believing in me no matter what,” said Ross. “Throughout all the fun high school memories that I've experienced, there was also something way deeper that I learned: always believe in yourself. This was a big thing that I had to instill in my mind because if I hadn't, I wouldn't be where I am now,” she added

Ross encouraged her fellow graduates not to become discouraged by obstacles they may face in the future. “We have already been through many problems that are currently happening now like COVID-19, rising unemployment issues, cultural intolerance and many more,” she said. “As the LCHS class of 2020, I know that we have goals that we will not allow anyone to crush.”

Patrick reminded her classmates that high school graduation is not the stopping point for the Class of 2020. “Today is the day we graduate, but we certainly have not ‘made it’ or finished our journey,” she said. “Instead, we are only beginning our journey as the class who chased their dreams in the middle of a pandemic. While we prepare to go our separate ways, we must remember to have faith, build each other up, and focus on our purpose.”
