Scranton Elementary STEAM Academy hosted its Pizza Celebration for students who have attended the school’s Produce to Pizza Summer Gardening Camp, along with their families and community members. The school was awarded one of only five grants in the state through S2TEM Centers SC entitled Growing in SC: The Future of STEAM is Here. For six weeks, students cultivated their garden full of produce used to make pizza sauce and toppings, along with taking a culinary class and inventing a tool to help S.C. Farmers. Students marketed their tools by creating posters and a commercial highlighting how their tools can help S.C. farmers. Guest speakers from DHEC and local farms also were invited in to speak with the students about gardening and how to make gardens more eco-friendly. The purpose of the summer pizza garden program is to expose students to agriculture, which is a prominent career field in South Carolina, while encouraging them to enhance their 21st century skills needed to become productive citizens.
