Students at Dr. Ronald E. McNair School of Digital Communication and Leadership are learning how to work as part of a team as well as leaderships as part of a weeklong camp led by Carla Angus, owner of Transforming Minds, LLC.

The camp includes exercises on team building, solving problems as a team and developing leadership skills. The camp focuses on seven tools for the students to learn and use: confidence, courage, responsibility, education, communication, respect, cooperation and critical thinking.

Special guests from the business world also talk with students about the importance of these skills in the workplace.

“We are excited about the partnership with Carla Angus and the exposure she afforded our student leaders,” said Principal Deitra Johnson. “The students learned how to lead from within and developed skills that will be with them throughout their lives. I know this camp will empower those students as well as their peers. We look forward to increasing our Leadership Academy in the future.”

The camp ended Thursday with a trip to Locked Inn in Florence. Locked Inn offers escape rooms, which are live adventure games in which players are "locked in" different themed rooms. The 17 campers have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles to escape within 60 minutes. Escaping the room within the allotted time is dependent on the participants working together as a team to solve the puzzles.
