Lake City High School observed The Day of National Concern About Young People and Gun Violence by inviting Gary Shumate, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Florence County Sheriff officers, Lake City Police Chief Kip Coker, and ATF Task Force Officers to speak with the student body about keeping gun violence out of schools and communities.

Mr. Shumate began by sharing that three teenagers die from guns every eighteen minutes, which is the leading cause of death among teenagers in America.

Mr. Shumate asked students to help make LCHS a safe place by signing the gun violence pledge and then acting on it.  He said all students and teachers deserve to be safe while at school. While emphasizing what students should do, he shared consequences people from the area have faced, or are facing due to guns.

In closing, the Assistant U.S. Attorney reminded students to sign and take the pledge seriously. “I can tell you from personal experience, you can always find a way out,” he said of students who feel they do not have a lot of options.

Students were then instructed how to sign the pledge, receive a gift, and had the opportunity to ask the officials questions.

After signing the pledge, LCECCHS students joined the more than ten million teenagers who have signed the pledge since the inception of this Day of National Concern About Young People and Gun Violence in 1996.
