Transition Services

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was reauthorized in 2004, the transition provisions were changed and strengthened in order to better prepare students to pursue further education, employment and benefit from independent living skills. Although the federal law states that transition services need to begin at age 16, South Carolina has adopted age 13 as the time when transition needs to be addressed. This coincides with the development of Individual Graduation Plans for students and represents a great opportunity to mesh the efforts of teams in career exploration, planning and exposure to classes related to a student’s post secondary goals.

Transition is a coordinated set of activities designed to promote movement from school to post-school activities.
