Three FCSD3 Students Accepted by Governor’s School

Three Florence County School District Three students have been accepted into arts programs at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville.

Westley Quattlebaum, a sophomore at Lake City High School, will attend the residential school beginning next year and will concentrate on the visual arts.

The nine-month public residential high school gives the artistically talented high school students from all over the state the opportunity to develop their abilities in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Students apply and audition to concentrate in one of five art areas: creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual arts. The residential high school experience is unique because of the school's mission to serve the artistically gifted high school students of South Carolina through programs of pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence.

Rashaad Simmons and Cadence Sheeder, both eighth graders at Ronald E. McNair Junior High School, will attend the Summer Discovery program, a two-week program for rising ninth graders interested in animation, creative writing, drama, music or visual arts. Simmons will focus on drama, while Sheeder will concentrate on visual arts.

While they work intensely in their specific art areas, students are exposed to the other art areas with opportunities to attend performances and guest lectures.

Students are required to apply and audition or provide a portfolio of their work, depending on the area of concentration. Admission to the programs is based primarily on artistic potential and ability.
