Area church, municipal and business leaders gather at Florence County School District Three’s board meeting room Thursday for a meet and greet and to receive a “State of the District” presentation from Superintendent Laura Hickson.

Mrs. Hickson gave participants an overview of programs and initiatives that are underway or being planned for the district. One initiative Mrs. Hickson focused on was the Fellows in Education program. The Fellows program was suggested to Mrs. Hickson by Mary Kelly, executive director of the Greater Lake City Chamber of Commerce.

The Fellows in Education Program will be composed of a select group of 20 community and business leaders who are civic-minded and who support the need for the expansion of our local educational resources. The program is designed to improve education for students by involving local leaders in the atmosphere and experiences that our students share each day. The program seeks to create a community of leaders that can share firsthand knowledge and help collaborate with policymakers and the community on the educational concerns of the future.

The Fellows program is designed to give local leaders a unique, behind-the-scenes look into several schools within Florence County School District Three. Over the course of about eight months, leaders will see firsthand some of the daily struggles and constraints educators face in the classroom. Leaders will hear about seismic shifts in student needs and the additional state and federal requirements now placed on schools, teachers and administrators in Florence District Three.

Each month’s program will center on a different educational experience that is unique to the classroom. The Fellows in Education program will offer opportunities for community leaders to contribute to the development of better education policies in the communities in which they live and work.
